The legacy system is ruining. my. life.
I had a happy little kingdom of characters underway on Juyo. All female. Various races. Two of each class so that I could eventually have one of each Advanced Class. A decent array of physical appearances, though with an unintended fetish for green eyes and a complete lack of body type three.
I was happy.
Then the patch hit and I checked out all the new options.
My family tree was hopeless. Not only did it make one long horizontal line, I couldn’t fit in several of my characters at all, except as allies or rivals. The naming convention I finally decided to try out in this game makes the very idea of a family tree ludicrous. I mean, unless Alexx has the same ego George Foreman does, there’s no way everyone in the family is named Alex-something.
Just, no.
I realize this isn’t game-breaking and I can, in fact, blissfully ignore the whole mess.
However. I have a thing. We’ll call this thing pure insanity, because that’s pretty much what it is.
And it is killing me to have all these stupid locked items in my legacy pane. Killing me.
So, my alts have reached a standstill. I have the trooper, who is 42 and a character that I fully enjoy. I love the way she looks and the way she plays. She and my main are safe.
But the rest of the little buggers are facing deletion. The only reason I haven’t just blown them all away at this point is because I am still not sure what I really do want out of the legacy system. I’m considering all manner of insane things, from leveling to cap (and possibly subsequently deleting) one of each of the Imperial races and classes to perhaps having a 50/50 Republic to Imperial ratio.
Or maybe I’ll make some male characters, though the idea of having a spouse in my family tree jars a bit with the companion romance options. Cheesy as those are, I enjoy the bit of fluff they bring to the game – even if Cat Bauer does interrupt all the kissing to hack up a hairball.
One thing I am fairly sure of is that I want to rework which class gets which crew skills so I can better maximize my companions and their bonuses.
But I’ve learned that it’s better to not make hasty decisions to delete anything. So for now I’m working on a Chiss Bounty Hunter (and having a total blast with it) on my home server and ignoring anything else Republic-side until I have a better idea of what I want to do.
That being said, I think I do need to free up a space in the near future just to try a male character. I could never get behind playing male characters in WoW because I hated how ungainly they looked compared to their female counterparts. I’m not sure if it would be any different for me in SWTOR, so I can’t commit to giving any of my female characters a spouse or brother or jilted ex-lover-turned-rival for now.
Writing about all of this actually hasn’t clarified anything except that I don’t know what I want to do or how to go about it. But I do think I’ll abandon the naming convention. It’s so frightfully dull.
My plan when I get around to plotting my “tree” is to make all my toons mortal enemies of each other. And don’t worry TOO much about maximizing trade skills per alt if you can get the same (or better) bonus on the stupid ship droid with a module doodad. (My ship droid has 2: one for gathering, one for crafting.)

So, your log-in screen will be a cat fight waiting to happen?
I’m not going to stress too much about the crafting, but I do want to take it into account a bit more on the second pass.
I have a similar deal with female characters, I never played one on wow it just didnt feel right. I’m a guy and dammit guys shouldn’t play female toons. But, on SWToR when I decided to make an operative alt, a male just didn’t seem to fit the mold for me, so I rolled my first female. So far so good, I love it, and I think that as far as operatives go, female is the only way to play them.
I’m glad I’m the only person who finds it odd to play outside of their gender.
I am rolling a male Smuggler today in order to see if I can make a go of running around on a man toon. I picked a Smuggler so that I won’t have to be nice to Corso.
I’ve always been a one faction per server kind of guy, and the legacy system has come along and kicked that square in the nether regions. Since my wife and I are established with legacies on three servers we initially decided that we were going to have one server be primarily Republic, using a single slot for an Imperial for the legacy features they’re considering that will require you to have both factions. The second server we decided would be just the opposite, 7 Imps and 1 Rep, and the third would be a 50/50 split.
The more I play along in the various servers though, the more I feel it’s much better in the long run to go with the 50/50 on all of our servers. Having the imbalanced factions means I’m either going to ignore the lone character most of the time, or my presence in the guild will be so small that I never really feel at home there. Also, legacy features that you unlock for your class and companions are duplicated between factions, but wasted when they’re duplicate classes. For example, you get +10 presence for all companions that you finish their quests/conversations with across all five companions for all eight classes (+400 Affection total), but leveling two Consulars for example means you don’t get anything at all from leveling that class a second time unless you’re unlocking a different race (which could easily be done on another class all together which would give you more benefits).
The more I look at the legacy system, the more clear it becomes that a 50/50 split is the only way to go. If you want to experience the story from other perspectives, whether that’s gender based or alignment based, then it’s best to do that on a second server for now.

I’ve been turning this over since yesterday and I have to admit it does make a great deal of sense to go 50/50, but I still have some reservations about making the leap. Mostly because my primary goal is to hang out with the Snarkers. Seeing other stuff comes secondary, so I may just stick with a 7:1 for the time being (and ignore the majority of the 7 until I have used the one to unlock some things). It’ll be a lot of work, but it’s not as though I need to do it on a time-table, so I’ll just keep on moving slowly and trying to be really sure about anything before I delete or re-roll.
